NRTServers
I just ordered 8 Dell 1950's with server 2003 web addition. They come with 5 Cal's per software/box. What the heck is a CAL and are 5 enough...lol...This is driving me nuts. It's like reading an owners manual for a car trying to find out the do's and dont's. So 8 Dells, 8 copies of 2003 server that's 25 CAL's. Some-one please enlighten me will they? This is my first server(s) purchase rather than leasing from a re-seller like ThePlanet/Softlayer I want to do it right. Thanks Dave
Jissh
CAL= client access licence Check your windows licensing agreement for 2003 web edition . I believe hosting games on is it a no no, at least thats what Microsoft told us when we applied for the partnership program.
jbiloh
Best bet is to go with Standard. Web edition has some ugly tendencies. Where do you plan on hosting these 8 machines?
Daersun
Windows is just one of those things that you ALWAYS want to SPLA, the numbers dont add up to buying it.

Ok Thank you, I searched the Microsoft site looking for the answers I was looking for to no avail. I am hosting them here in Ottawa, Ont. at a colocation offering OC-192 Dave
jbiloh
Dave, Don't take this as salesmanship, but are you sure you've thought that idea through? There is virtually no market up there. Locations like Chicago, Dallas, NYC are much better choices.
NRTServers
Yes.... I basically have them all dedicated for use with the project I am working on.... Dave
NRTServers
Ottawa is one heck closer for me than Dallas, NYC or Chicago. I have had an issue already with ThePlanet where a server was down for 52 hours with there! error....and it was a very simple fix....that will not happen again.
