Games CPU & Bandwidth Usage

Crimson

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just wondering if theres a collection of information anywhere pertaining to the usages of different game servers. I only play TF2 and some CSS, but would like to expand my gaming comunity to other games such as COD4, BF2, CS 1.6, etc. From experience I know srcds is fairly big CPU strain, but not too bad on ram. And from reading these forums COD4 is a big RAM hog, but thats all i've got.

Not really, you have to do testing, but I can shoot you some information from how I would gauge things.

This needs to be taken with ALOT of pinches of salt.

If 1 is not much CPU usages, and 10 is alot.

COD(other COD) - 3

COD4 about - 4

CS Series - 5

BF2 - 9ish

These numbers are all pretty arbitrary and nothing is a substition for actual testing. You need to know what servers your running, their speed, are the servers going to be idle. Some servers use a lot of resources even when idle, others use none.

Its not so much a science, but a mix between a skill, guesswork and good judgement.

Not sure if you are the Crimson I know but if you are, you should recognize my nickname ;)

In terms of expanding your community it really depends on where the communities interest's lie because gamers don't usually appreciate vanilla servers if the game is getting to be over 2 years old.

I mention this because addons crunch on more resources.

As for general RAM and CPU usage I would say that:

BF2, Uses decent amount of RAM, plenty of CPU

Any COD game, uses anywhere between a good amount to a lot of RAM, not a lot of CPU

Source Based game, minimal amount of RAM, plenty of CPU
