tehrichie
I noticed somewhere on here that you said people used to lineup and pay big bucks for servers back in the day. Do you remember a clan by the name of [NiTrO] by any chance? A clan I was apart of a long time ago and I believe they had their servers hosted with you in Chicago. I know the owner was paying hundreds of dollars a month for a couple 32 slot pubs and a couple privates. Just curious to see if you remember us - could have been another company. This was seriously back in either 2002 or 2003
Defcon|Rich
We started in 2002 under the name x-tremegaming and switched to defconservers the following year, Back then there weren't more then a dozen providers total hosting game servers so it's a possibility. Although I don't believe we opened the Chicago location until later on. At the time we had a presence in Detroit which being so close to Chi. it didn't make sense to use both. After our contract ran out there we moved everything to Chicago, Somewhere around 2004/2005 if memory serves. But you are correct about the pricing. Back then it was standard to charge $40-$50/mo for a 10 slot Unreal Tournament server. It might sound excessive but bandwidth, space etc were also very expensive during that time so profit margins weren't all that different then today. trancemode
Chicago is a popular location its quite pricey but i think Atlanta or some other one cost more.
GodFather
I think Chicago is cheaper then going with a few other places (like Texas even) Q9650, 8gigs ram, 10TB bandwidth, 1TB HDD = 219/month in Chicago from Singlehop. Getting that in Texas.... wasn't so cheap lol.

Singlehop is junk , Chicago has always been more expensive then Dallas. although they just added a second DC recently which is DFT so that isn't junk but the first DC is pile of crap. GodFather
Singlehop hasn't gave me any trouble and if they did not nearly as much trouble as ThePlanet.com or hivelocity has. ThePlanet has been failling hard at times lately. I remember ordering a Dual core server with 4gigs of ram (just for L4D) and they gave us a Quad core server with 2gigs ram..... how fail is that. Same thing with Hivelocity and SoftLayer. Somehow they ALWAYS mess up... somehow - Bad luck I guess, but hey, SingleHop has been great for me. As for prices. There were some other companies in Chicago that were a lot more expensive and since the companies I've worked with haven't let me down, it's been good. tehrichie
So you don't remember [NiTrO] by any chance? It's possible that the servers were Detroit based but I can't remember. Your website just looked very familiar. Awesome history though

Your website just looked very familiar. Awesome history though Sorry, The name doesn't ring a bell but honestly we've hosted countless clans over the years and I'd be hard pressed to remember a quarter of them It's good to see your still gaming though. If you need anything let me know!

GodFather
Usually you get what you pay for though. Hmm odd, my experience was the complete opposite. I payed a lot more from Theplanet.com and got half of what I originally wanted. Shoot not even a month a go we ordered a Quad core - 8gigs - 10TB.. Ended up giving us that stupid duel core. How do they mess that up Where as I saved a lot more going with SingleHop and got exactly what I wanted and haven't had any down time what so ever.... Defcon|Rich
Choices are everywhere and as you know not every solution is exactly perfect for everyone but it looks like you found a good fit with singlehop. That's nice to see. Good luck to you.
tehrichie
We used to run a server called Detroit Killzone. I don't know, maybe it was a different GSP. How many were there back 8-9 years ago? I don't expect you to remember the client, named was Jeff - alias Dmort Figured I'd make the thread and see if it rang any bells as THOSE days WERE the best days for gaming. A lot of people don't even know what WONIDs are
Defcon|Rich
Oddly enough I do remember a client with the username Dmort. That had to be around 2003 or so when we had space at the switch & data facility in Detroit. Small world eh?

Defcon|Rich
Not very many at all.. Honestly, Game hosting wasn't taken very seriously back then, It was considered a very small niche for gamer geeks and not something that could generate profits so the industry stayed fairly small. It's actually quite funny that the same guys who looked down at the GSP industry all started pushing game hosting a few years later... Folks like thePlanet, Steadfast, etc. layerdtech, liquidweb were all very vocal on shutting out game hosters.. Now every one of them use or used game hosting as an advertising platform.. Hippocrites..
