AJK2408
Hi Guys, Will taking the fans out of a server effect the amps it uses? - For instance, our data center were in have a fantastic cooling and we dont really need 12 fans in a server, so taking them out of 42 machine should by theory half the amperage?? studeggle
I doubt half most fans use very little power. Will they save, certainly but the bulk of th power draw is from components not the fans. You also need to be certain temp is still maintained without the fans as electrical components will draw more amps when they are hot. All the cold in the world won't help if there is dead space with no air movement. I have seen many systems where fan count and placement is way off but that realy is something you should test one at a time not all at once. AJK2408
fantastic, thanks for the reply, were going to test it out in a full rack of our new stuff going in. see how much it draws with and without fans, also test temps and performance with and without. jbiloh
Turn the BIOS fan control settings on to reduce the RPM of the fans when the server is under low load. Pulling all the fans from your servers will cause failures.
Jesse
Turn the BIOS fan control settings on to reduce the RPM of the fans when the server is under low load. Pulling all the fans from your servers will cause failures. Analyze the cost of lowering your power usage with how quickly parts could fail. The safer bet will save you money most likely. The cost of downtime might be much greater than a couple amps.
jbiloh
The system won't work without fans (for longer than a few minutes), will simply get way too hot with only passive cooling.
