tcngs
Ok I have a question, witch would you preffer for hosting Quake 3 engine games and Steam Games. Quad Xeon 1.5gbz MP or Dual AMD Opteron 246 (2.0ghz) They will both be the same price that is not the issue. I just want the best performance for these types of games. Thank you
ECF
When you say Quad Xeon are you referring to a Dual CPU Dual Core machine? If so, what is the model of the CPUs?
tcngs
It is actualy 4 1.5ghz Xeon MP processors
ECF
Tough call, but I would say the Dual AMDs.
Daersun
The quad procs actually have a slower FSP from what I understand and if the game/application doesn't split across all the processors properly the "upgrade" to a quad core is actually a downgrade
tcngs
Thanks for every ones reply. One more question For CS:Source servers witch would you get better performance out of AMD Opteron 246 (2.0ghz) 1 mb cache or Xeon 2.8ghz 800mhz FSB 1 mb cache? Thank you
ECF
I will leave this to the CS guys to chime in, but they should be very close performance wise.
jbiloh
Nocona Xeon, no question in this case. The archiac Opterons don't do well with system clock stability under load.
Daersun
Jon man, your all over the internet today Ran into you at WHT in the fragforge post and now here
Monk
MP servers have L3 cache, which is slower, I'd stick with opterons, because of NUMA, and their opcodes are better anyways

jbiloh
Very cool. I know I feel smarter after reading that!
bryan
I only run Dual Xeons Ive tried AMD and never had much luck. Mainly do to some of the games I host. AMD did run great for the new games like CoD, BF2, BF2142.. But I say Xeons are better in my case. Bryan
deacon
I have dual optis and they are great... UNLESS you are trying to run 3 x 32 DODS/DOD servers and then they die. I'm sitting at 91% CPU on both procs and have load averages of 3.5+. They work great for BF2 and 2142 though.
