adamnp
Curious on your thoughts/opinions of the new chips coming out/already out (penryn/phenom), and also of the newest competitor in the chip market..Montalvo's chips...From what they "say" the mix of the quote, "asymmetrical cores onto the same piece of silicon, Montalvo can cut power consumption by dishing applications that don't require a lot of computing firepower onto less-powerful, more energy-efficient cores. Applications could conceivably also be shuttled to low-power cores after their need for high-performance elapses: Microsoft Outlook, for instance, requires a burst of performance during the launch phase but far less once it's running." Any thoughts on this?....Any regards to colo, and gaming related applications?...

Not for game servers my man. Time keeping would be all but destroyed on that chip, and you can say HELLO to 40 FPS spiking game servers.
lkonig
Jon, You seem to know the perfect server setup to host game could you list a few? I know they would/could vary a bit depending on the game.
swish
Intel Core2Quads are great.
JasonF
My current server of choice is a Quad Core Kentsfield 2.4 Ghz. They are affordable and run great. I am watching forums and benchmarks on Harpertowns and Phenoms as a possible successor but have not been sold on either yet.
adamnp
I use a variety of machines for whatever application they might be working with...I feel some stuff needs a little more oomf, and others don't... We do have quite a nice stash of the E3220's though, and they do perform quite nicely as the others here have stated..
lkonig
are you guys tarting out with 4gb's of memory in them?
swish
Usually you want to start a gaming machine at 4gb and add from there.
JasonF
For quad core servers I prefer 3-4 GB.
Spartanfrog
Eh at least for srcds based games, besides TF2, they are not RAM intensive. I know some who ran 100 slots of CSS with 1 GB of ram with no peformence issues. Course thats just srcds.
xpservers
Were cutting in AMD Phenom Quad Cores on Tuesday, will let you know then. Heard many good things about them. Abit cheaper that Intel Core2Quad and run at the same or even greater capacity than the Intels. Jon from Velocity has them for sale, great prices. JasonF
Anyone have any comparison benchmarks to share? The client side benchmarks are not too good for the 2.3 Ghz Phenom vs 2.4 Ghz Kentsfield especially the original steppings that require the erratum bios fix. http://techreport.com/articles.x/13741/
adamnp
Thats more along the lines of the info id like to see....I've heard 'rave reviews' from the salesmen, but from the geeks' i'm not seeing as much praise over the chip.
