Is there any such variable that will return the primary (e.g. 1st) IP on the box?

Not at the moment. However I think someone has requested this in a ticket due ot FOW needing it.

Yes for FFOW they have a required command line parameter PingRedirectIP= that needs to have the primary ip value. I am requesting on their private hosting forum that they find a way to not require this, but if you can put it into a quick update patch would resolve the problem as well.
