Not really guys. For 2003 MS doesnt forbid anything than web (except installation limitations of SQL Server, ...). But it's true for 2008 Web, you can use it only as web server.

Dont forget the 2003 Enhanced licence (SPLA), it's a 2003 Standard for little price ;)

Web edition works fine, it is quite quick too, probably cos lots of services that are in Std don't come with it. The main drawback though is that it has a 2gb RAM limit. Great for low spec servers, but a waste on something like a quad or duo.

Directly from MS's site:

Q.Can I use Web Edition as a file server or a terminal server?

A.No. Windows Server 2003 Web Edition can be used solely to deploy Web pages, Web sites, Web applications, and Web services. For more information, see the Overview of Windows Server 2003 Web Edition.

Game Servers are NOT web sites or web applications.

Yes i agree with you but as far i remember nothing in EULA or SPUR forbids that ;)

Anyway, we're using only Std or Entreprise (for 8Gb servers) :)
