Do slaves require MySQL access?

You would need to setup slaves with replication permissions in order for them to replicate data from the master.

It is recommended that you have a mysql database if you have remotes and that they connect directly to the database. You will get errors if your master or remote has Linux and the database on the master is sqlite.
