Win 2008 Server issues

Weve come across a weird issue with win 08. Servers run great however if you want to remote into the server and view the actual console you cannot do so without some glitches.

Usually on win 2003 you can use the mstsc.exe /console

with win 08 you can use mstsc.exe /admin

This is to view remote console 0 which enables you to view the actual game terminal window via remote admin.

With Win 08 you cannot. If you log in normall you will get a promt (interactive message) if you click it you can see the the game server teminal windows but then crashes the remote session and you need a hard boot.

Wonderin if anyone else havin this issue, for the time being we set tcadmin to not show the server on desktop and it works fine.

Jon B its JohnCarlo, thats reason I had this rebooted twice jus to let ya kno

:)

Can you just login to a second session(id 1 ) and then shadow session 0? I know in 03 you have to enable shadowing in the gpedit snapin before this is allowed but it might allow you to view and interact with the console session without causing your crashes.

1. Open the Group Policy snap-in (Gpedit.msc).
2. In the left pane, under the Computer Configuration branch, expand the Administrative Templates branch.
3. Expand the Windows Components branch.
4. Click the Terminal Services folder.
5. In the right pane, double-click Sets rules for remote control of Terminal Services user sessions.
6. On the Setting tab, click Enabled.
7. In the Options box, click Full Control with users' permission, and then click OK.

Then just login to a session, open command prompt and type shadow 0 Should be similar I hope in 08.

tried that, first you have to allow multiple logins for 1 id,

then jus remote into loopack 127.0.0.1 as /admin in session 0

console still does not appear,, known bug i guess

That is not shadowing. Thats remoting into localhost. Completley different protocol.

Allowing multiple logins per session is not required for shadowing. ;)

As you can see from the SS I have attached shadowing is actually it's own protocol.

I think you misquoted me. I understand thats not required for shadowing however unless you have a Vista machine at home which I dont, i use XP you are unable to use the /admin flag. You must use the /admin flag when connecting from a Vista machine into your servers session 0 on RDP.

So an easier way is to remote into your 08 box normally then create a remote connection on your desktop to access session 0. So in total here you will have 2 logged sessions.

An alternate way to view session 0 is by using Ultra or Real VNC

Leet yes there are 2 compatible versions that we tried. Ultra VNC and Real VNC personal and enterprise. the free version is not compatible with vista which is win 2008 kernel.

You still have to run Win media player or srcdsfpsbooster.exe to achieve the 1000 fps thats all.

Besides enabling HPET in the bios, what else do you have to do to the O/S to get the 900fps on HL?

Turn EIST off, and make sure your CPU/Motherboard is capable. Any Core2Quad rented from ColoCrossing can run 1000 FPS no problem.

I didn't misquote. As I understand the issue you are having trouble opening a second console session via remote desktop even if it is from the session id 1. The reason you need to do this is to interact with session id 0 (console session) interactively with full control along without crashing the apps running on it.

So my suggestion was to shadow in not open a remote console session from id 1 via localhost /admin .

Meaning... remote into the box with 2008 on it, now you being on session id 1 then open a cmd window and type shadow 0 which will enable full interactive control to session id 0 or the console session without crashing it. All thats needed is for youto enable shadowing without permissions done via group policy edit.

Hope this helps and clears the confusion.... I am installing S08 here on a Dev box to see if I can reproduce your error.

Also I do not see what Vista has to do with the issue since you clearly did not mention it in your previous post's. I have Vista here as well as XP.

Well Win 08 is Vista's server version,, uses Vista kernel therefore the /admin flag wont work if remoting from a source XP machine.

Your way of going into the cmd and typing shadow 0 is an option. ive done this before but tried it now and doesent work. getting the below error:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]

Copyright © 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\Administrator>shadow 0

Your session may appear frozen while the remote control approval is being negoti

ated.

Please wait...

Remote control failed. Error code 7050

Error [7050]:The requested session cannot be controlled remotely.

This may be because the session is disconnected or does not currently have a use

r logged on.

C:\Users\Administrator>

What I will try is updating win xp to SP3. It has RDC6.1 which supports the /admin flag

Did you enable shadowing without permission via gpedit? That error code means it is not enabled.

start/run gpedit.msc

7. In the Options box, click Full Control without users' permission, and then click OK.

Now you can shadow console without permission from that session.

Also make sure when runnign the game you add fps_max 0 on the command line, if you use fps_max 1000 it will fluctuate

Guys not sure whos runnin 08 here on CSS servers but were having an issue when users run Zblock where the server crashes every 20 minutes or so. Exact same CSS setup on 03 servers and its working fine. Im not sure if there is a compatability issue with Zblock and 08
