NRTServers
Morning Folks> We are building our own rack, have bought the rack and now are looking to get some suggestions for a switch and APC. We are starting off with 15 1u to add to what we have elsewhere...so, a what? Netgear or cisco switch and what might we be looking for in options per say the APC.. We would like to be able to have a backdoor into the system. I have searched the net...but I am thinking we are not typing the right search phrase. Thanks for any suggestions.. HIS-MOTHER
Netgear is crap. Cisco is good but pricey. You can find decent managed Cisco switches on Ebay. I used to grab the 3524XL-EN series for around 200-300 bucks. Solid layer3 Managed switches. As for APC http://apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=30 Full products you are looking for for remote reboots. You can also go cheap and grab a digital loggers brand. Just make sure that it supports Ethernet with web interface so you can assign a IP to it. Some are misleading and only use console. On a side note .. If your looking to save money on startup I have a old APC Model 7626 that supports console connection. 208v converted to 120v Comes will all the 90 degree power cables for your servers. I can let it go for $100.00 if you want it plus shipping from Chicago. If your in Chicago you can pick it up. http://unitedsquads.net/imagesmom/100_0325.jpg
leetservers
You have to use APC, end of story. we use the zero U. We used to use Cisco but prices are just crazy. We now use Dlink layer3's We like them. =bobby

Dave Why a rack would not support a vertical is crazy and beyond me, they should fit right inside on the left or right rear of the rack and save you valuable space that you are paying for but if you need a 2u rackmount try grabbing a digital loggers. I had a couple of these as well but already sold them off. http://www.digitalloggers.com/EPCR2.html The only downside to these rebooters is that they have 16 outlets but they are on 8 channels so if you reboot channel 1 it reboots outlets 1a and 1b but they do support full web interface and you can actually assign user level access to a individual channel. Great for colo clients needing access to reboot there box only. They also do not have a visible power/amperage usage meter on the case:(
NRTServers
YIKES...close support for that little option...thanks..I will find out why I can't use a vertical...It's a mid Atlantic rack...so I would think...
NRTServers
How many racks can I get in the Tiki Hut?...is it A/C'd
Monk
netgear is a good buy if you can't afford cisco. If you want cisco, and you need fast-e, a 2950 is fine. 3524XL's are alright, but you don't need layer3, only straight layer2.
HIS-MOTHER
How many racks can I get in the Tiki Hut?...is it A/C'd 5 racks and it's ocean breeze AC. ( also the drink special of the day.. SeaBreeze. ) You may only need a layer 2 switch now but buying for scaleability is always better. So Monk is correct but if I remember correctly you do alot of video streaming right NRT? I also may be biased about Cisco. I have my CCNA and am working on my NP I just checked the MA racks on there site. Those racks do look awfull cramped, almost like there is no room at all in the rear but it does look like it might accomodate them in the front. Depends on the model of the rack as well . Monk
Keep it simple. If you don't need it, don't buy it. If you think you may need it in the future, then buy it. If you don't do layer3 at all (no routing protocols) then don't buy layer3 switching gear. Only reason people need to do layer3 is for routing purposes.. Or MPLS etc. A layer2 switch does the normal stuff you would need, like vlans/trunking/vtp etc etc. Some 2900 series are faster than a 3500XL series. For example, a 2950 has around 10mpps of backplane capacity, whereas a 3500XL has low 8s. Also; the 3500XL's are EOL'd, whereas some/most of the 2900's are still current. leetservers
I'm assuming he is just going to run one switch for his one cab, Layer 3 would suit him pretty good. Storm control etc. =bobby
NRTServers
Ok...thanks to all that responded...your input is appreciated. As this is my first own build-out for a rack/servers...I want to make sure I do it scaleable and with the right equipment. Dave
SickPuppy
Dave what the Hell dude you copying me, we just purchased a rack of 10 dual core servers that we are going to rent out as dedicated boxes. 2 gigs of RAM and 120 gig HD. Should go for $50 to $60 a month depending on what we can work out with the colo and bandwidth fees.
qwidjib0
Assuming you're just accepting a hand-off and not doing anything crazy, I'd recommend a Cisco 2950, which is pretty standard for just a rack of servers. We generally use those with APC 7930's on cabinets ourselves.. that 2950/7930 pairing is actually very common for a simple rack of servers. If you're looking to save some cash on the switch, beyond ebay, there are masses of companies that specialize in refurbished Cisco gear, a lot of them will even warranty the gear for a short while themselves and you can probably find at half the cost. If that's outside your price range, Dell actually makes some very nice stuff for data centers too.. I don't know their model #'s, but I know they have a very slick little 48 port switch that goes for about $500, whereas a refurbed 2950 is usually around $1200. That will be a much better option than the Netgear.
Monk
You can get 2950-48s from ebay for about $400 or so. Then you can get a smartnet account for cheap.
