Daersun
http://www.fragd.com/?module=specials The way I understand tickrates - 100 tick works on >=16 66 tick works on >=24 33 tick works on >=32 What the HECK is a 700 tick server, and is it even noticable? And how can it run on a 20 player game? Im sure I saw a post by valve about tickrates
spongeh
Are you confusing CS and CS:S CS can be tweeked so you get upto 1000 fps, but from my experiance not very stable. This is set by playing with the Hz that the kernal on linux operates at. Massive CPU usage. CS:S gave you the command line option for Tickrate >100. again tho massive CPU usage for a 100 tick server and not very stable.
Daersun
Is it worth offering a higher then 100 tick server?

ECF
100 tick seems to be the standard for competitive clan servers. I don't see any reason to go higher than that.
Daersun
I agree, I think any higher then that is simply bragging rights. Is it even possible to see a diffrence in a 700 tick V a 100 tick other then the 100 tick being more stable?
spongeh
That link is for a CS1.6 Server running at 700 .... dont confuse the way that CS and CSS work they are 2 different engines. With CS:S there isn't much point going all the way to 100, here's why: Tickrate 33 = game updates every 0.03 seconds Tickrate 66 = game updates every 0.015 seconds Tickrate 100 = game updates every 0.01 seconds So tickrate 100 only reduces the time between game frames by 5 milliseconds, at in increased cpu cost of about 100% I seem to recall from the server mailing list that valve do not recommend going over 100 as things start to go funny (they didn't specify what though). We see 60-70% CPU usage for 100 tick CS:S server on our AMD64 3200+.
Daersun
I saw the same post from valve. Now, how does it work with CS1.6? Is it worth selling 100+ tick servers?
spongeh
cs1.6 doesnt have a tickrate setting. its all kernal tweeks and fps.
Daersun
So it is not possible to sell a 700 tickrate 1.6 server? Im confused here! Been a long week
Defcon|Rich
It's been kicked around forever if raising the tickrate is a benefit or not.. I believe it is to a certain extent but for the most part it's more or less a gimmic.. Raising it a little can be effective but you have to stop and ask your self can your eyes register the difference between 0.01 and 0.03? Most gamers won't know the difference.. But telling everyone that they have a xxx tickrate server is more important to them so if anything it's something that has a financial benefit

spongeh
Having an X tickrate server is just basically an e-willy contest, mines bigger than yours. Its not worth the hassle of running a 100 tickrate CS:S server. We are still offering them but at a large premium over a standard server.
Monk
adjusting the tickrate just makes float() operations more precise.
Stealth
With a bit of marketing people always prefer 100 tickrate, wether there is a noticeable difference or its purely psychological, or indeed bragging rights is not an issue. Put a price on the tickrate and people will pay.
