lkonig
Hey gang wanted to know how much memory your COD4 servers are using? Mine seem to be using about 240MB per 24 slot server.
rich835
Mine are about the same, if not more. It's a real RAM grabber! I think it's improved with 1.4 though, when 1.0 was first released, we saw it grabbing over 500mb over time and not releasing it when players were gone, until the game process was restarted. Daersun
I am just starting to get my hands dirty with COD4 but my understanding is its heavy ram low CPU - would you guys echo that statement?
ECF
Yes, that is correct according to what I have seen.
lkonig
Yes I am seeing low CPU and high memory. My CS servers are just the opposite low memory high CPU. I do not undertsnad how some GSP's are charging so low for COD4 servers since the memory usage is a hog.
rich835
We find we have little choice but to charge low for COD4, simply because everyone else is! If we don't compete, we don't sell, bottom line. I agree though, it sucks. For the support and time involved being a gsp, most people are practically giving servers away at their prices these days. lkonig
It seems the GSP's kill themselves all in all. The big boys usually win in the end that's what I am afraid of.
HIS-MOTHER
RAM is cheaper then CPU and you can stuff alot more of it in a server these days. I'll take a RAM pig over a CPU hog any day.
JasonF
It seems the GSP's kill themselves all in all. The big boys usually win in the end that's what I am afraid of. The object is not to compete with the big GSPs. You need to set your prices for what you feel will allow you to bring in a profit and grow your business. Let your services and server performance drive your business, not your prices.
lkonig
Vet great advise and thats what I have always done. Greatly appreciated. I just want to offering a great gaming experince for people all in all as I am sure you all do.
leetservers
Bandwidth use concerns me most. -bobby
Daersun
Thats what you get for using Internap As games get more and more complex I think BW usage is going to start shooting up. Games with dynamically generated landscapes ARE coming. HL had bullet holes, but just think when craters start forming from shots and the playing fields are every increasing the size of traffic that we could be looking at. Also as voip is getting more and more bundled ....
HGN-Daniel
A agree with what vetwebhosting said. We get a regular influx of Call of Duty 4 orders despite our prices being higher than most other hosts. ($2.45/slot) I don't think people just look at price alone. ECF
I wouldn't worry too much about bandwidth. Our 32 slot server which is populated most of the time use 76 gig last month.
leetservers
We pay by 95th not gb's. A busy 32 will use 2megs primetime, not really complaining at our prices the customers are paying for it. I do have a dedi customer with 5 servers using 9 megs at night and he dont mind the overage charges. =bobby
bryan
On average a customer of ours who runs a COD4 tournament used 2-2.5 megs per month. A few customers who have dedicated servers run 4-6 COD servers and average around 6-10 megs. So as long as you charge and made a bit off of each server. Ram is would be the lest of my worries. bfarrell
But the BW and memory and HD space are worth the increase in good ol' gaming fun, right ? I personally find this game extremely fun and could (do) play it for hours
