How do you OWN a server box?

You can purchase or build your own server, and then colocate it with a provider who offers colocation.

I would like to buy one or build one (havent decided yet). but would it be possible if i sent it to a data center and have them put it online?

You have to mail a working server to the DC/Colocator and they will set it up for you. Some do charge for the initial setup so check into all expenses before deciding on the location.

If you are looking for cheap try Calpop or CI Host. but ask yourself this question first, do I have the time and ability to run a dedicated box. It is not hard if you know what you are doing.

Calpop, I've heard a lot of bad about them. I suggest colocationamercia.com. Great people, FANTASTIC backbone for gaming (as they are their own ISP).

I'd recommend you buy a pre-built server or RTO (rent-to-own). Going into building a 1U server blind is not a good idea.

RTO's can be expensive. I'd be better to buy your system pre-built and colocate it.

Depends on who is providing the bandwidt (cogent,Level3, AT&T, Savis,Sprint...)

How much bandwidth is being provided and is it block (?? GB/month) or 95% percentile (?? MB/sec)

colocationamercia.com charges $85 per Mbps in NY and $49 per Mbps in CA my servers average 6-8 Mbps that’s $510-$680 in NY and $284-$392 for CA. If you know that your Mbps is going to be low then it is not bad.

 

I pay $99 for the first 10 Mbps 95% percentile and $75 for each Mbps I use over 10.

Our servers are 4u dual quad cores with 8GB of RAM.

If you can use a 1U I would recommend it, we stuff too much into one box, a 4U works better for our needs. You can find datacenters that charge the same from 1U up to 4U. We have to keep cost down because we only charge $1.00 a slot for almost all of our game servers.

I am colocating my dedicated servers with RapidSwitch and the Colocation Fee: £35 and Free Setup and you have alot of features with the dedicated server and if your server does not have a OS Installed on it they can install one on it
