KingJ
For the next server we colo, we're looking at using one of the new i5s, since they're excellent value-for-money compared to the i7s. No point building on the older C2D architecture with affordable i5s around. However, i've not been able to find any i5 boards with onboard VGA. Has anyone else come across any? GodFather
That thread was kind of pointless.... he already stated he was going to use the i5's and was merely trying to find a motherboard for the i5's with onboard vga... funny how Derek tells people to read threads, and fails to read threads.... lol To answer you question: There are no motherboards out that have onboard VGA for the i5's and I don't think for the i7's either. They weren't meant for server CPU's (Even though they work well that way)
HIS-MOTHER
If you want to use that cpu just get a solid board and a really cheap video card.

However, it's quite difficult to fit a graphics card (which sits perpendicular to the motherboard) into a 1U case.
Derek
However, it's quite difficult to fit a graphics card (which sits perpendicular to the motherboard) into a 1U case. Yea, you may want to hit up a 2U case anyway, as the i7's do run pretty hot.

HIS-MOTHER
However, it's quite difficult to fit a graphics card (which sits perpendicular to the motherboard) into a 1U case. LOL. You get a riser card and make sure it's of the ribbon cable type. Perfect example right here http://www.plinkusa.net/webR1PCI-E1-1R8.htm Fits right in no issues no heat problems as long as you have good fans/blowers. How do you think we did it way back in the day, and we are talking with smoking HOT AMD's ..

Your best bet is a low grade one like that as it wont generate much of any heat. Also if you do some searching you can find those ribbon risers for 5-9 bucks as well. With the proper 1U and sufficient blowers you can use them in a 1U. (i5 or i7)

(i5 or i7) Not according to multiple people I have spoke with and the multiple people are decent sized hardware builders so I will take there word for it. HGN-Daniel
I know Core i7 runs hotter than the previous gen but I have a hard time believing it won't run in a 1U enclosure... I mean you can put (and run) a dual processor quad core system in 1U, correct? Why wouldn't you be able to do one Core i7 920?

Correct, I thought the same thing but I was told otherwise by multiple people that build thousands of machines.
