beta testers group?...Hrmm, I started this thread 2 years ago and have no clue myself. I'm assuming maybe the people that were in the beta testing group for v1? Are there more than a couple of them still around?

More info on this would definately be nice. :)

The initial beta which could even be considered an alpha test really will not be allowed to be used in production. So basically you would simply be utilizing your machines to test it but no money would be coming in for the game/voice servers you run on them.

As stated above we do already have a tester group for version 2. Most are enterprise license holder that have been with us since the beginning.

Don't worry folks, you will be able to test as well. I am sure there are more than enough bugs/fixes to go around :)

Yes. We have a current group which beta tests updates for version 1. Most of these testers in the v1 group are ranked providers for EA which require frequent changes to adapt to changes being made by EA.

The V2 group is completely seperate from this group. However some v1 testers do carry over to the v2 testers group as well.

We do not simply choose enterprise license holders for the v2 group. The group has been with us since the very beginning of TCAdmin and will continue to be testers through all of our versions.

I feel some people think that they are being slighted by not being in the v2 testers group. This is not so. We currently have a well rounded group that tests for us to make sure things are ready to go out to the rest of our clients. This ranges from the games they host to their current size to resources that they have availible.

We keep this group small as we do not want to be bogged down with an overwelming amount of support tickets. Remember we still have to fully support the current version along side developing and testing version 2.

One announcement that I will give to you guys is version 2 will support both windows and linux. Please do not ask about the linux version etc... it will all come out in the public beta :)

Oh my, remind me to get all the tricks memorized. I can see the collection of tickets from the wanabes that grabbed a box stuck free linux on it and now they are GSP :D

But will be nice to have one product that handles both ;)

And people wondered why we did not support linux....

I peronally am against it for the reason you mentioned above, but there is a demand for it so we will provide it.

Why does everybody just assume because a company wants to use linux they are cheap and kiddie hosters?(gameservers prolly has more linux boxes running than all of us window users combined) 70% of all web sites and some of the largest hosting companies out there use linux for stability and it's more lean than Microsoft's junk, I'm glad TCA is offering it in there next version it's about time. The only sad thing is most of your new games do not support linux versions but hopefully that will change with a good control panel to manage them from.

The largest hosters are using windows now more than ever. I do not know the exact amount of linux providers vs. windows providers but the game makers are beginning to slowly move towards supporting one OS and that is windows.

EA has ceased support for linux support for the Battlefield series and I from what I have seen some other companies such as Activision are probably going to take the same route or their games will require an after the fact port to linux. Which means waiting for server files and updates.

I guess we will see what the future brings...

People have been trying to push *ix out of the picture for the past 20 years now, and its not happened thus far. All that weve seen is *ix's gotten a much more broad following and a much better GUI for the real windows eek's. Personally I think its use will continue to grow, especially in today's times where a $15-30 windows licensing charge is more than the profit margin the provider is making. An instant cut of that license could take many from being a 'break even' company, to a 'sustainable and profitable' company, or put a smaller company that can't compete pricewise right back into the bid. An outright ignorance of this would be a very sour business move, for any company. Cash flow will be critical in how day-to-day business operates from now, gone are the times of lackluster spending and paying-to-be-lazy expenditures.

( this is an opinion of myself )

Glad to see TCA will finally adopt it for the public users. That alone may keep mr. william, and the others off the map.

Like kevin said, we'll have to see what the future holds. Plug my name under the *ix category. Fuckya bill I want my $20 bux/machine back. (Ya know how many hamburgers/hookers or chips @ the roulette table that cash woulda baught over the past 15 years? *ALOT*)

No one said if you want to use linux your a kid. In fact I said I had linux boxes, so I'd be calling myself a kiddie if that were the case.

But Windows tends to costmore, and more cost reduces those without the real desire.

Also we are talking gaming, web hosting is irrelavant to tcadmin (except the control panel web page, and at least last time there linux support did not include supporting the installation of the web on linux and that may well be the same this time.) and I seriously doubt another game control panel for linux will tip the scales. I have a good panel for linux, but its seporate. This would allow me to have one panel for both. And games are about money, and most game writers view the profitable market being in support of PAID OS's not free ones.

I love linux, no complaints against it. But I am also smart enough to no it has a ton of followers that are simply after freebies.

Well, I still personally like windows better but that is only "my" opinion. Linux vs. Windows will always be a topic of speculation. I have never seen hard facts ever listed as to why linux is better than windows or vice versa. People simply say "Games run better on this OS". Which means nothing without proof.

It all comes down to what you prefer using. If you prefer linux then use it. If you prefer windows then use it.

My only concern is what was mentioned above with uneducated people trying to become GSPs because linux is free. This causes support to be increased on our side since we would now be supporting 2 operating systems not just 1. Also linux has a bigger learning curve than windows as far as game hosting and troubleshooting.

Hopefully it will all work out for the best for everyone regardless of what OS they use.

And the new version will be able to run the Master Server/Website on linux or Windows just to clarify that question.
